So What Is Bowen Therapy

Originating from Australia, Bowen Therapy is the ‘new kid on the block.’ Training began in the late 1980s, after Tom Bowen, the technique’s creator, passed away. Fast forward to today, and The Bowen Technique is hailed as the most exciting modality in the world. However, there’s a common misconception that our skeleton alone dictates alignment, fixable only by addressing structural issues. In reality, this isn’t correct, as the next analogy will show.
Imagine your skeleton like a suspension bridge, such as the Penang Bridge, with your muscles and soft tissue acting as suspension ropes. Everything stays in harmony when these ropes maintain perfect tension. However, if one or more ropes tighten, the structure shifts. Consequently, this leads to uneven wear, aches, pains, and even non-muscular health issues elsewhere in the body. For example, the effects might not stay local to the tension spot. A Bowen Therapist aims to find problematic tissue and gently encourage it to return to its original state. Then, they pause to observe if the tissue was tight or pulled from another tension area.
A very targeted ‘Less is Best’ approach is used, much like avoiding repeated key presses when a computer crashes. Therefore, these problematic areas are often found far from the symptom. For instance, many suffer back pain or plantar fasciitis (pain on the soles of feet) due to teeth grinding in sleep. Prolonged grinding affects how the jaw bone rests. As a result, with all this in mind, don’t be surprised if you visit us with knee problems and your therapist focuses on your back or neck instead.

Alawiyah is a certified Sports Rehab Therapist who has completed her Bachelor in Sports Science (Honours) majoring in Sports Rehabilitation from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI). Beyond that, she is also a certified sports massage therapist from UITM. Alawiyah is a highly enthusiastic person when it comes to her passion in helping people. She strongly believes that by understanding your body well and having the right knowledge in finding the root of the problem, can help one to reach in maximising the quality of their rehabilitation. Bowen therapy has brought an awareness about how our body works on it’s ‘healing process’ without using any modalities or medication, its techniques’ being 100% natural. Hence, this treatment is safe for all ages, from newborns to elderly and the result has been shown to be effective. She believes that by helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person.
Alawiyah Currently enjoying her training to become a specialist in the application of The Bowen Technique, Ala is currently unavailable for bookings. You will however see Ala around the centre observing and learning from our therapists along with assisting our clients with any questions they may have.
I graduated with a diploma in Physiotherapy from KLMUC Kuala Lumpur metropolitan university college, however, I was also always interested in assisting companies to help their clients know more about the products and services they provided. Working at My Bowen Therapy has given me the best of both worlds. Every day I get to enjoy sharing my knowledge of anatomy whilst also advising clients with regards to the products and services we offer and how we can assist.

Hanan holds a Bachelor Degree (hons.) in Physiotherapy from UiTM Puncak Alam as well as Diploma in Pharmacy from UiTM Pulau Pinang.Apart from that,she managed to obtained Sport Massage Cert I whilst pursuing her degree in physiotherapy. Changing path from Allied Healthcare to now Bowen Therapy has been an entirely amazing and fascinating journey for her.It is somewhat an eye-opener that introduces her to a whole new world of well-being and healthcare.
