Sciatica

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a term commonly used to describe pain, tingling, numbness or weakness that follows the path of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica symptoms typically affect one side of the body and may be felt in the lower back, buttock, leg or foot.

Rather than being a condition itself, sciatica describes a pattern of symptoms that may occur when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed. Because there are a number of reasons why sciatica symptoms can occur, understanding what you’re experiencing and having a thorough assessment are important first steps in deciding the most appropriate course of action.

service-info-icon-1

The Sciatic Nerve

There is a sciatic nerve on each side of the body, and each is the largest nerve in the body. It begins in the lower back and travels through the buttock and down the back of the leg before dividing into smaller branches that supply different areas of the lower leg and foot. This is one reason why symptoms can vary from person to person.

service-info-icon-1

How Sciatica Can Feel

People experiencing sciatica symptoms may notice pain, tingling, numbness, burning sensations or weakness. Symptoms may be felt in the lower back, buttock, thigh, calf or foot and can range from mild to more persistent.

Some people find their symptoms change with different activities or positions. For example, some people notice their symptoms more when sitting, standing, walking or lying in certain positions, while others find movement helps reduce discomfort. Every person’s experience is different.

service-info-icon-1

Why Symptoms Can Occur

Sciatica symptoms may occur when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or affected. There are a number of reasons why this can happen, and the location or intensity of symptoms doesn’t always tell the whole story. This is one reason why it’s important to consider each person’s symptoms and movement individually rather than making assumptions based on symptoms alone.

service-info-icon-1

Why an Assessment Matters

Every person experiences sciatica symptoms differently. During your assessment, we take the time to understand your symptoms, medical and injury history, posture, movement and other factors that may be relevant to what you’re experiencing. This whole-body approach helps us develop a personalised support plan tailored to your individual needs.

Ala has helped me tremendously managing my sciatica pain and now in managing the side effects of the microdiscectomy that I underwent last year. She’s very knowledgeable and very patient in explaining to me about my condition. I feel so much better after each session and have now even got my husband on board to Bowen Therapy.

I was diagnosed with sciatica in May 2025, and I started my therapy at My Bowen Therapy few months later. After about 4 sessions without much improvement, I wanted to give up. My therapist Ala is very patient with me and encouraged me to give it another few sessions. Luckily I listened to her because my condition improved tremendously after 2 more sessions. Now I can go back to the gym for my regular exercises – cycling and swimming. The frequency and intensity of the pain have reduced by about 90%. Thank you, Ala, for your patience, support and encouragement.

From knee pain to being hospitalized due to severe lower back pain. After 2 months of physio with the hospital, I started my lower back pain recovery with Bowen 3 weeks ago. Lower back pain improves tremendously and currently able to walk normally. Previously unable to straighten my left leg due to sciatica – lower back until my calf. I am now able to wash dishes and clean my porch. I Just have to remember to take a break in between. Thank You Therapist Ala for your help and kind advice.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Rather than focusing solely on the area where you’re experiencing symptoms, we consider how different areas of your body may influence movement and overall function. This whole-body perspective helps us build a more complete understanding of your individual needs.
Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Understanding Fascia

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds, supports and connects muscles, joints, nerves and organs throughout the body. Although awareness of fascia has grown significantly in recent years, many people are still unfamiliar with the important role it plays in movement and support.
Understanding Fascia

Why It Matters

Understanding fascia and the body’s interconnected nature helps us appreciate how different areas of the body work together to support movement and function. That’s why we look beyond the area where you’re experiencing symptoms during your assessment.  By considering the whole body, we aim to better understand the factors that may be relevant to the symptoms you’re experiencing and support your individual needs.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Understanding Possible Causes of Sciatica Symptoms

Sciatica symptoms can develop for a number of reasons. In many cases, they occur when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or affected somewhere along its pathway.

Because several different factors may be associated with sciatica symptoms, it’s important not to assume that everyone has the same reason for what they’re experiencing. Similar symptoms can occur for different reasons, which is why a thorough assessment is such an important first step.

service-feature-icon-2

Changes in the Lower Back

Changes affecting the lower back, including age-related changes, disc-related changes or narrowing around the spine, may irritate or affect the sciatic nerve in some people.

service-feature-icon-2

Muscles and Soft Tissues

The muscles and soft tissues around the lower back, pelvis, hip and buttock can also influence how your body moves and functions. In some people, these tissues may be relevant to the symptoms they’re experiencing, which is one reason we take a whole-body approach during our assessments.

service-feature-icon-2

Pregnancy

Some women experience sciatica symptoms during pregnancy as their body naturally changes to support their growing baby. Because some treatment options may be more limited during pregnancy, many women choose gentle, hands-on approaches to help support their comfort and mobility. If you’re pregnant, your assessment and support plan will always be tailored to your stage of pregnancy and individual needs.

service-feature-icon-2

Every Person Is Different

Previous injuries, posture, movement patterns, daily activities and general health may all be relevant to the symptoms someone is experiencing. Rather than making assumptions based on symptoms alone, we take the time to understand the bigger picture so we can provide care that’s tailored to each individual.

Because several different factors may contribute to sciatica symptoms, understanding the underlying contributors is often more valuable than focusing on the symptoms alone.

Common Sciatica Symptoms

Sciatica symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people experience mild discomfort that comes and goes, while others may find their symptoms more persistent or disruptive to everyday activities.

Symptoms often affect one side of the body and may change over time. They can also vary depending on movement, body position and which part of the sciatic nerve is affected.

service-info-icon-2

Pain

Pain may be felt anywhere along the path of the sciatic nerve, from the lower back and buttock down into the leg or foot. Some people describe it as sharp, shooting, aching or burning, while others describe a dull, persistent discomfort.

service-info-icon-2

Symptoms Can Change

Sciatica symptoms don’t always remain the same. Some people find their symptoms become more noticeable when sitting, standing or lying in certain positions, while others find gentle movement helps reduce discomfort. Every person’s experience is different.

service-info-icon-2

Changes in Sensation

Tingling, pins and needles, numbness or burning sensations may occur in the leg or foot. These symptoms may come and go or become more noticeable during certain activities or positions.

service-info-icon-2

Weakness

Some people may notice weakness in the affected leg or foot, making everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs or standing from a seated position feel more difficult.

How We Assess Your Sciatica Pain & Symptoms

Every person experiences sciatica pain differently. That’s why every consultation begins with a thorough assessment. We’ll discuss your symptoms, relevant health and injury history, observe your posture and movement, and assess factors that may be relevant to your symptoms, such as previous injuries and scar tissue where appropriate. We then develop a personalised support plan tailored to your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bowen Therapy is used by many people experiencing sciatica symptoms. Every person is different, so we begin with an assessment to better understand your symptoms, discuss your goals and determine whether Bowen Therapy may be appropriate for you.

The number of sessions varies depending on your symptoms, how long you’ve been experiencing them and your individual circumstances. Some people notice changes within the first few sessions, while others may benefit from a longer course of care. We’ll discuss our recommendations after your assessment.

Most people find Bowen Therapy comfortable. Many people also describe the sessions as relaxing. Occasionally, an area being worked on may feel briefly tender rather than painful, especially if the muscles or soft tissues are particularly tight or sensitive. Your therapist will always work within your comfort levels and adapt the session to your individual needs.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. In many cases, Bowen Therapy can be performed through light clothing, although your therapist will advise you if any adjustments are needed during your appointment.

No. You don’t need a referral to book an appointment at My Bowen Therapy. If you’ve had scans, reports or letters from another healthcare professional, you’re welcome to bring them with you.

Yes. Many people choose to include Bowen Therapy as part of their overall healthcare. Depending on your individual circumstances, it may be used alongside physiotherapy, chiropractic care, medical care or other healthcare services. If you’re currently receiving care from another healthcare professional, it’s important to continue following their advice unless they recommend otherwise.

Many women choose Bowen Therapy during pregnancy to help support comfort and movement. Every pregnancy is different, so we’ll discuss your stage of pregnancy, your symptoms and any relevant medical history before recommending an appropriate approach.

Some symptoms require prompt medical assessment rather than a routine appointment. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience:

Loss of bladder or bowel control

Numbness around the groin or saddle area

Rapidly worsening weakness in one or both legs

Severe symptoms following significant trauma

Fever, unexplained weight loss or other symptoms suggesting you may be seriously unwell

If you’re unsure whether your symptoms require urgent assessment, it’s always safest to seek medical advice promptly.
