How Stress and Anxiety Can Affect the Body

Stress and anxiety are normal human experiences, and everyone responds differently.

Although they are often discussed in relation to emotional wellbeing, they can also be accompanied by physical changes. Some people notice increased muscular tension, changes in breathing, jaw clenching, headaches, difficulty relaxing, or changes in sleep.

These symptoms can also occur for reasons unrelated to stress or anxiety, which is why persistent or concerning symptoms should not automatically be attributed to either.

Understanding the Autonomic Nervous System

The autonomic nervous system helps regulate many processes that happen automatically within the body, including heart rate, breathing and digestion.

Two important parts of this system are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

service-info-icon-1

The Sympathetic Nervous System

The sympathetic nervous system is involved in the body’s response to challenge or perceived threat and is commonly associated with the “fight or flight” response.

During periods of stress or anxiety, people may experience changes in areas such as alertness, heart rate, breathing and muscular tension.

These responses are normal physiological processes, although how strongly they are experienced varies considerably between individuals.

service-info-icon-1

The Parasympathetic Nervous System

The parasympathetic nervous system is involved in functions associated with rest, digestion and recovery.

Both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity are normal and necessary. The nervous system continually responds to changing circumstances rather than operating in one fixed state.

Why This Matters During Your Assessment, and Where Bowen Therapy Does and Doesn’t Fit

At My Bowen Therapy, we do not diagnose or assess anxiety disorders themselves.

Our assessment focuses on your physical presentation. Depending on your individual circumstances, this may include posture, movement, breathing patterns and areas of muscular or soft-tissue tension.

This helps your therapist understand the physical symptoms you are experiencing before discussing whether Bowen Therapy may be appropriate for you.

Bowen Therapy should not replace appropriate medical, psychological or psychiatric care for anxiety or other mental-health conditions.

As they say pain is pleasure. Welp not gonna lie this treatment is painful, I just had my 7th session. Especially when you had a stressful week full of anxiety and you had flu. I couldn’t come for 2 weeks, T_T Your body will be tense like hell because build up tension in the body. But trust me the pain is worth it. The calm will come after the storm jk. For real it’s worth it, I went for chiropractic and normal massage and stuff like that but so far only bowen has help me because it focuses on the full body. It helps me with constipation, sleeping better and I generally feel more calmer and relax. I haven’t felt this kind of relaxation my whole life, it’s a whole nother level of feeling zen.

Why Your Assessment May Include More Than Where You Feel Tension

Physical tension does not always occur in one isolated area. Depending on your presentation, your therapist may assess your posture, movement, breathing pattern and areas such as your neck, shoulders, upper back or jaw to build a broader picture of how your body is moving.

Not every factor will be relevant to every person, and findings elsewhere in the body do not necessarily explain the cause of your symptoms. Your assessment helps us understand your individual presentation before discussing whether Bowen Therapy may be appropriate as part of your care.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Rather than focusing solely on the area where you feel tension, we may also consider previous injuries or surgery, differences in movement between sides, sleep, and everyday activities such as prolonged sitting, computer work, driving or frequent phone use that could be relevant to your presentation. This whole-body perspective helps us build a more complete understanding of your individual needs.

Understanding Fascia

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds, supports and connects muscles, joints, nerves and organs throughout the body. Although awareness of fascia has grown significantly in recent years, many people are still unfamiliar with the important role it plays in movement and support.

Why It Matters

In our experience, some people become accustomed to longstanding areas of tension and may not realise how much their movement or posture has changed over time. For those exploring Bowen Therapy for anxiety, understanding patterns of tension, breathing and movement may also form part of the broader assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some people experiencing stress or anxiety also experience physical symptoms such as muscular tension, jaw tension, headaches, changes in breathing or difficulty relaxing and may choose Bowen Therapy as part of their wider care.

My Bowen Therapy does not diagnose or treat anxiety disorders. Our focus is on assessing your physical symptoms, posture, movement and areas of soft-tissue tension before discussing whether Bowen Therapy may be appropriate for you.

No. Bowen Therapy should not be considered a treatment for an anxiety disorder, and My Bowen Therapy does not provide psychological counselling, psychotherapy or psychiatric treatment.

If you are experiencing anxiety that is affecting your mental health or everyday life, appropriate support from a doctor or qualified mental-health professional may be important.

Bowen Therapy may be considered alongside appropriate healthcare where you are also experiencing physical tension or musculoskeletal symptoms.

Stress and anxiety can be accompanied by physical changes, including increased muscular tension, jaw clenching, changes in breathing, headaches and difficulty relaxing.

However, these symptoms can have many possible causes and should not automatically be attributed to stress or anxiety.

Different areas of the body work together during everyday movement.

Depending on your presentation, your therapist may assess your posture, movement and areas such as your neck, shoulders, upper back or jaw to better understand your individual physical presentation.

Findings in another area do not necessarily mean that area is causing your symptoms.

Yes. Bowen Therapy may be used alongside appropriate medical or mental-health care.

Continue following the advice of your doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist or other healthcare professional and let your Bowen therapist know about relevant existing care during your consultation.

Yes. If you have been prescribed medication, continue taking it exactly as directed by the healthcare professional who prescribed it.

Do not stop or change prescribed medication because you are receiving Bowen Therapy unless the prescribing healthcare professional advises you to do so.

This varies depending on your individual physical presentation, how long you have been experiencing your symptoms, and how you respond to treatment.

Your therapist will discuss their recommendations with you after your assessment rather than prescribing the same number of sessions for everyone.

Your first Bowen Therapy session is RM130 and includes a free consultation and posture assessment, plus a 3-page posture report. Ongoing treatment options and current pricing can be discussed with you at the centre based on your individual needs.
