What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves sideways and rotates rather than following its usual alignment.

It can develop at different ages, although it commonly begins during childhood or adolescence. Adults may also live with scoliosis that developed earlier in life or experience changes in spinal curvature associated with ageing.

The degree of curvature varies considerably. Some people have mild scoliosis with few or no symptoms, while others may notice differences in posture, muscular tension, stiffness or discomfort.

Scoliosis is more than simply having “poor posture”. A structural spinal curve cannot simply be corrected by consciously sitting or standing straighter.

Scoliosis Should Be Properly Assessed

If you think you or your child may have scoliosis, appropriate medical assessment is important. Diagnosis may involve a physical examination and imaging, such as X-rays, to confirm and measure the spinal curve.

Bowen Therapy does not replace medical diagnosis, monitoring, bracing, or specialist scoliosis treatment where these are required.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Scoliosis

Scoliosis can affect people differently. Some people experience few or no symptoms, while others may notice changes in posture, muscular tension, stiffness, or discomfort.

Common signs and symptoms may include:

  • One shoulder appearing higher than the other
  • Uneven hips or waist
  • Leaning slightly to one side
  • One shoulder blade appearing more prominent
  • One side of the rib cage appearing more prominent
  • A visible curve through the spine
  • Clothing appearing to hang unevenly
  • Back discomfort or stiffness, particularly in adults
  • Muscular tightness or fatigue around the back and surrounding areas

Not everyone with scoliosis experiences pain. If you notice signs of a spinal curve, particularly in a child or teenager who is still growing, appropriate medical assessment is recommended.

Saya mempunyai masalah sakit pinggang selama bertahun. Saya ingat ianya hanya masalah sakit pinggang biasa.

Tq so much Nurul Atiqah, you’re the best therapist in Bowen! 👍👍😍 Beliau menjalankan tugas dgn sangat baik, seorang yg peramah & ceria. Beliau telah banyak membantu dalam mengubati masalah scoliosis saya serta memperbaiki posture badan saya.

Beliau juga tidak lokek memberikan info2 yang berguna pada setiap sesi. Terima kasih banyak2 Nurul!!

And thank you so much My Bowen Therapy for all facilities & hospitality. If you’re looking for alternative treatment, this is the best alternative choose for you. Really RECOMMENDED!!

The best to relief pains. I have scoliosis and been going to Bowen for 9 times. I had some terrible pain after 9 session I feel a better and could do things like I did before. The therapist are really good.

I was diagnosed with kyphosis and scoliosis which lead to cervical spondylosis. This condition causes pain in the lower and upper back, numbness in the arms, neck and scary dizzy spells all stemming from nerves impinging on the spinal column. Chiropractic treatments were very painful, uncomfortable and not helping my condition. The non-evasive 1 hour treatments by Dr Carolyn and her team did wonders for me and I would recommend anyone seeking for an alternative means of treatment to give Bowen Therapy a try.

Why We Start With a Whole-Body Assessment

Scoliosis affects each person differently. Rather than assuming the spinal curve is the only area worth considering, we start by understanding your symptoms, posture, and how your body is moving.

Your therapist may consider:

  • Spine and back – where you experience stiffness, tension, or discomfort
  • Shoulders and rib cage – whether one side feels tighter or moves differently from the other
  • Pelvis and hips – how these areas are moving in relation to the rest of your body
  • Muscles and fascia – areas that may feel persistently tight or be working harder
  • Whole-body movement – how different areas of your body work together rather than viewing each area in isolation

Your assessment helps us tailor your Bowen Therapy session to what we find, with a focus on supporting muscular and fascial tension, comfort and movement.

The aim is not to straighten or structurally correct the scoliosis curve, but to provide treatment appropriate to how your individual body feels and moves.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Rather than focusing solely on the area where you’re experiencing symptoms, we consider how different areas of your body may influence movement and overall function. This whole-body perspective helps us build a more complete understanding of your individual needs.
Looking-Beyond-the-Symptoms

Understanding Fascia

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds, supports and connects muscles, joints, nerves and organs throughout the body. Although awareness of fascia has grown significantly in recent years, many people are still unfamiliar with the important role it plays in movement and support.
Understanding-Fascia

Why It Matters

Understanding fascia and the body’s interconnected nature helps us appreciate how different areas of the body work together to support movement and function. That’s why we look beyond the area where you’re experiencing symptoms during your assessment.  By considering the whole body, we aim to better understand the factors that may be relevant to the symptoms you’re experiencing and support your individual needs.

Why Can Scoliosis Affect the Way the Whole Body Feels?

Your spine does not work independently of the rest of your body. It forms part of an interconnected system involving the pelvis, rib cage, shoulders, muscles, fascia and joints. Fascia is the connective tissue network that surrounds and connects muscles and other structures throughout the body, which is why we consider tension and movement beyond the spine alone. With scoliosis, changes in the position and rotation of the spine can affect how different areas of the body move and manage everyday physical demands. Some muscles may feel tighter or work harder than others, and movement can feel different from one side of the body to the other.

Scoliosis at Different Stages of Life

Scoliosis can affect both younger people and adults, but the considerations can differ depending on age, growth, and the type of spinal curve.

service-info-icon-1

Adolescent Scoliosis

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis develops during childhood or adolescence without a clearly identifiable underlying cause. Because the spine is still growing, scoliosis in children and teenagers should be appropriately assessed and monitored. Depending on the degree of curvature and remaining growth, medical management may include observation, bracing or, in some cases, surgery.
Where appropriate, Bowen Therapy may be considered as complementary support for muscular tension, stiffness and general physical comfort. It does not replace specialist scoliosis assessment, monitoring or treatment.

service-info-icon-1

Adult Scoliosis

Adults may have scoliosis that developed earlier in life or experience changes in spinal curvature later in adulthood. For some adults, back discomfort, stiffness and changes in movement can become more noticeable over time.
At My Bowen Therapy, we focus on supporting the muscular tension, stiffness, discomfort and movement restrictions that may accompany scoliosis, with treatment tailored to how each individual feels and moves.

Your Scoliosis Treatment Approach

Scoliosis affects each person differently, so scoliosis treatment in Kuala Lumpur should start with you rather than with the curve. Whether you are an adult who has lived with a curve for years, or a parent of a teenager recently assessed, your assessment shapes the session that follows-rather than the session following a routine.

speech-bubble

We Listen

We take time to understand your symptoms, when your scoliosis was diagnosed, and how it affects everyday life. Adult scoliosis and adolescent scoliosis raise different considerations, so we ask about age, growth stage and any monitoring or specialist care you are receiving.

We Observe

We look at your posture and how you move, including whether one side feels or moves differently from the other.

We Assess

We assess areas that may be relevant to your symptoms — muscular and fascial tension, and how the spine, rib cage, shoulders, hips and pelvis are working together.

We Tailor Your Session

We Adjust as We Go

Scoliosis is individual, and so is the response to treatment. Your therapist adapts the approach according to your comfort, movement, and how you respond.

The My Bowen Therapy Approach

At My Bowen Therapy, Bowen Therapy forms part of our assessment-led approach rather than being delivered as a one-size-fits-all treatment. Every appointment begins with a thorough assessment to better understand your symptoms, posture, movement and individual needs before tailoring your care.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Bowen Therapy does not cure scoliosis or straighten a structural spinal curve.

At My Bowen Therapy, treatment focuses on supporting associated muscular and fascial tension, stiffness, discomfort, and movement.

We do not claim that Bowen Therapy can straighten or structurally correct scoliosis.

Treatment and monitoring of scoliosis depend on factors such as the type and degree of curvature, age and remaining growth. Some people may require specialist monitoring, bracing or surgery.

Adults living with scoliosis may consider Bowen Therapy for support with associated muscular tension, stiffness, discomfort and movement restrictions.

Treatment is tailored to the individual, taking into account your symptoms, movement and relevant medical history.

Potentially. However, children and teenagers with known or suspected scoliosis should receive appropriate medical assessment and monitoring, particularly while they are still growing.

Where appropriate, Bowen Therapy may be used as complementary support for muscular tension, stiffness and physical comfort rather than as a replacement for specialist scoliosis care.

Idiopathic scoliosis is scoliosis for which a specific underlying cause has not been identified. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a common form that develops during the growing years.

Yes. If you or your child shows signs of scoliosis, appropriate medical assessment is recommended.

A healthcare professional can assess the spine and determine whether further investigation, such as an X-ray or specialist referral, may be appropriate.

Some people with scoliosis experience back pain or stiffness, although not everyone with scoliosis has pain. In adults, back discomfort can become more noticeable.

If your back pain is persistent, worsening, or causing concern, appropriate medical assessment is recommended.
