    Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

Do You Have Painful Feet? Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis.

One can experience various pain conditions that are associated with Plantar Fasciitis.

    • Swelling heel
    • Severe pain in the heel
    • Lack of sensation in feet
    • Sharp pain in heels while walking.
    • Pain in the soles
    • Limping while walking
    • Tightness or pulling sensation
So, what is Plantar Fasciitis, and how could it have happened to me?
The plantar fascia is a tissue that binds or joins the heel bone and the toes. It is a thin ligament that gets disturbed and misaligned due to various reasons discussed below and is often diagnosed in relation to pain on the bottom of the foot and/or heel.

Plantar Fasciitis is a medical condition wherein the plantar fascia swells up and results in the severe foot and/or heel pain. Traditionally, this condition is primarily seen in adults, aged people, or persons associated with athletics, sales work, and other fields that require long hours of operation while standing on feet.

Fast forward to 2021, and our award-winning team of Therapists at My Bowen Therapy, however, have observed that this pain does not only occur when one is standing for an extended period of time but also when the person habitually sits for prolonged periods or even grinds their teeth in their sleep (Bruxism).
Why would prolonged sitting teeth grinding or even other issues remote from the foot irritate the plantar fascia? Read on to find out more.

    Plantar Fasciitis

IS YOUR BODY TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING?

If you are reading this, you either suspect or have already been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, one of the most commonly mismanaged conditions. Our team of award-winning Therapists at My Bowen Therapy assists sufferers daily with various foot conditions.

Quick summary for those on the go!

STOP ICING NOW – Icing only numbs the pain and slows down the body’s ability to heal. Tissue needs blood and lymphatic flow (both fluids) to repair. What happens to the liquid when you cool it? Yes, the flow slows down, and therefore subsequently healing.

STOP USING STRETCH SLANTED BOARDS, TENNIS BALLS, FOAM ROLLERS – Although providing some relief, you may be doing more harm than good. Putting excessive strain on your calf muscles (gastrocnemius) and causing entrapment of the tibial and/or the calcaneal nerve.

DO NOT OPT FOR CORTISONE INJECTIONS BEFORE SEEKING ADVICE FROM A SOFT TISSUE SPECIALIST. This advice is most important to those who have a history of other body aches or pains. Or have scar tissue resulting from injury or surgery or even falls, especially onto the tailbone (coccyx).

PLANTAR FASCIITIS CANNOT BE TREATED AS A LOCAL PROBLEM – Scroll a little further down to watch our video to help you understand why.

    Plantar Fasciitis A Never-Ending Cycle

Often beginning as just an annoying tightness or ache in the foot and/or heel for the first few steps when you first get out of bed in the morning or when you get up from sitting, sufferers often ignore symptoms, unaware that it is at this moment they should seek the assistance of a Soft tissue specialist. However, most do not seek such aid until the pain has become more troublesome and often get caught up in mismanagement of their symptoms.

Unfortunately, many find themselves stuck in a cycle over months and sometimes years. Experiencing pain, finding relief through medication, icing, rolling on a tennis ball, or even resorting to more invasive procedures, such as cortisone injections. While unaware that seeking the assistance of a soft tissue specialist, FIRST, may have saved them in time, expense, and suffering.

It is worth noting that: The Dr. who invented the term R.I.C.E (Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevation) back in 1978, Dr. Gabe Mirkin, announcing publicly at a fascia conference that he is now aware that both icing and complete rest delays recovery. Symptoms may reduce or disperse over time using the above methods. However, most do not realize that this most likely happened as the body began forming compensation patterns. Such as taking pressure off the affected foot and distributing added stress on other body areas, such as the pelvis and knees, as the ROOT CAUSE had NOT been addressed.

Many assume that when their foot pain has dispersed using these methods above, then they are cured. Often, however, this is where it all starts to go wrong. Other aches and pains in the body, such as the back, shoulders, or knees, begin to appear/reappear. The sufferer has little or no knowledge that there is a very high probability that the development of symptoms is MOST LIKELY RELATED to Plantar Fasciitis.

What causes Plantar Fasciitis and Foot pain?

    Traditional thoughts

Prolonged stress on feet: This is one of the primary causes of Plantar Fasciitis. When we stand, our feet take the whole body weight. Think about 10, 12 hours of stress that our feet face while taking the bodyweight! The ligament gets swelled up due to extreme pressure, and the heel exerts acute pain.

Flat feet: It is evidently seen that patients with flat or straight feet experience this kind of pain in their heels. The curvy structure of our feet allows the weight to be evenly distributed. When the feet are flat, the weight is concentrated on one area, resulting in severe heel pain. In saying this, we are not big fans of insoles at My Bowen Therapy. Many are inconsistent with their use, which can put excess strain on other areas of the body.

Heavy body weight: Also known as obesity, over body weight can be another cause of Plantar Fasciitis. The extreme weight is upon our feet when we walk or stand, which results in heel pain.

The AWARD Winning MBT Team knows that the traditional thoughts are relevant; however, they have discovered many other compensation patterns manifesting into, or from, plantar fasciitis. These include but are not limited to: –

Prolonged sitting – The only proper muscle attaching the back to the legs is the Psoas, and as you will hear our therapist say, “The Psoas muscle hates sitting!” A shortened Psoas, which attaches to the same vertebrae the nerves feeding the feet originate from, can often display back or shoulder aches that come and go. Many experience digestive or respiratory issues, even anxiety.

Teeth grinding- Muscles attach from one bone onto another by tendons. Imagine the muscles that attach our jaw to our collar bone and breast bone, the Sternocleidomastoids, being overworked on one side. Would this shortened muscle pull on either or both bones it was attached to? And if one bone was being pulled on, would that affect the other muscles attaching other bones to it too? Interesting Eh? Fascia is truly fascinating!

So Why Should We Not View Plantar Fasciitis As A Local Issue?

Have you heard of the Skeletal System?

Have you heard of the Muscular System?

Did you know that there was actually a 3rd system connecting the muscular and skeletal system together? The fascia system and it causes up to 80 % of our aches and pains and is involved in EVERY move you make, called. And did you know that your foot was actually connected to your neck?

YES, you did? – Great, then you are already 90% of the way to your recovery! Book an appointment with our award-winning therapist today, and together get to the root cause of your symptoms and areas of dysfunction

You have nothing to lose, book a free consultation worth RM150 with one of our friendly specialists.

NO, what’s Fascia? – Watch this video for a quick overview of the effect of restriction within the fascial network. And better understand how WE MUST view the body as a WHOLE and NOT separate segment when treating plantar fasciitis. During your treatment, our therapists will also share their findings and explain their relationship to your symptoms to help you take care of your current and future well-being. PREVENTION.

Cortisone Injections are also not as safe as were first thought too!

Please watch this video for more information.

    It isn't always Plantar Fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is frequently misdiagnosed and is often confused with nerve entrapment of the “inferior calcaneal nerve. AKA Baxter’s Nerve that runs along the bottom of the heel that can get pinched.

Clinical symptoms of Baxter’s Entrapment and plantar fasciitis can be virtually identical and are a common discovery with those displaying foot pain, especially in those with a history of back or neck stiffness/ache

      So What Is Bowen Therapy

Growing numbers of Physiotherapists worldwide are including Bowen Therapy into their toolbox of skills and are being blown away by the results. When choosing a soft tissue specialist to work with, your primary concern should be their knowledge of anatomy, their understanding of the musculoskeletal system, and fine-tuned palpation skills instead of which machines they use. Our award-winning team of Physiotherapists at My Bowen Therapy understands this, and use their fine-tuned palpation skills, along with a full-body assessment in every session, to understand your condition and get to the root cause of the issue. Most are shocked to find out the source of your pain is not where they thought it was. read more.
