    How is Knee Pain Defined?

The knee joint connects to four bones, the Femur, Tibia, Fibula, and Patella. And your knee can be divided into four separate sections: medial tibiofemoral compartment, lateral tibiofemoral compartment, patellofemoral compartment, and the superior tibiofibular joint.

Knee pain manifests in many different forms. Any four of the above section’s components can be strained, injured, or diseased, leading to joint pains and movement discomforts.

What's the Root Cause of Your Knee Pain?

Did you know that the root cause of knee issues is often far away from the knee itself? Problems that cause knee pain often originate in the back or pelvis. Where muscles, tendons and ligaments connect the pelvis to the lower extremities. Treatment for knee pain may involve our highly skilled therapists working on your knees and back and other parts of your body.

A recent survey unveils a bitter truth that about 25% of people over the age of 50 worldwide suffer from degenerative knee diseases.

In the United States alone, more than MYR 12.5 billion (US$3 billion) is spent every year on keyhole surgeries. These statistics hint towards the fact that knee pain is turning out to be a severe medical issue with enough potential to disrupt one’s day-to-day activities and movements.

      Common Knee Pain Causes

Injuries to your ligaments and tendons – Our knee joint is surrounded by ligaments, tendons, or fluid-filled sacs. A knee injury can affect any of these. Some common knee injuries include:

ACL injury: Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the four ligaments that connect our shinbone to the thighbone. Tearing of the ACL triggers a potential injury very common to the sportspersons (soccer, basketball) mostly due to sudden change in their directions while running.

Fractures – knee bones, including kneecap can be broken due to an accident. Moreover, osteoporosis patients whose bones are brittle could be vulnerable to knee fracture.

Damage to the meniscus: The meniscus is made of flexible, rubbery cartilage. It acts as shockproof and protects our shin bone and thigh bone. It is prone to tear for a sudden twist or sudden pause in movement

Knee bursitis: Bursa is a small fluid-filled sac near our knee joint. It reduces friction among our bones, tendons, and muscles. Knee bursitis is inflammation of one or more than one bursa in our knee, causing painful symptoms and movement restrictions.

Patellar Tendonitis (Jumper’s knee) – Patellar tendon is a tendon that connects our kneecap to our shinbone. An injury or inflammation in this tendon can be mild or severe. While anyone can potentially suffer from patellar Tendonitis, it is prevalent in athletes, especially where jumping is frequent. That’s why it is called Jumper’s knee. According to the survey, 40- 50 percent of elite volleyball and basketball players suffer from Jumper’s knee.

        Mechanical Problems

Loose body – Sometimes for the reason of injury, a piece of bone or cartilage breaks off and floats off in the knee joint. This loose body creates trouble in knee movement. It is similar to a pencil caught in a door hinge

Iliotibial band syndrome: Illiotibial band extends from outside of our hip to outside of our knee. At times it gets too tight and rubs against the outer portion of the femur. Runners and cyclists often suffer from this syndrome.

Dislocated kneecap: The kneecap sits on the front of the knee and can be dislocated by a blow or sudden change in direction during sports or dancing. With that dislocation supporting tissues can also be damaged, leading to further severity.

Various types of arthritis – There are more than 100 kinds of arthritis that exist in various forms and degrees. Some of them are most likely to be mentioned.

Knee Pain Treatment In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Osteoarthritis Common type of arthritis can cause pain to the knee area; it happens when cartilages of the knee deteriorate with time.

Rheumatoid arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition. It is a chronic inflammatory disorder caused by our immune system attacks our body tissues, affecting our body joints, including knees.

        Increasing Risk Factors

Although knee pain can affect anyone irrespective of age and profession, certain physical and occupational conditions can jeopardize the human knee.-

Obesity: Being obese increases pressure on knee joints, which leads to an increased risk of osteoarthritis by breaking down the joint cartilage.

Muscle Inflexibility: The strong muscles at the knee area work as a stabilizer and protector of knee joints. Prolonged wear and tear, resulting in the dire lack of strength and flexibility of these muscles, triggers knee pain risk.

Certain professions: Sports such as Sepak takraw or Basketball, Football or Rugby where the heavy application of force is required, spikes up the probability of knee pain. Obviously, jobs with the requirements of more stress on knees can deteriorate the knee condition.

Previous knee injury: Hereditary problems and prior history of knee injuries can further worsen the condition

Cortisone Injections are also not as safe as were first thought too!

        So What Is Bowen Therapy

Growing numbers of Physiotherapists worldwide are including Bowen Therapy into their toolbox of skills and are being blown away by the results. When choosing a soft tissue specialist to work with, your primary concern should be their knowledge of anatomy, their understanding of the musculoskeletal system, and fine-tuned palpation skills instead of which machines they use. Our award-winning team of Physiotherapists at My Bowen Therapy understands this, and use their fine-tuned palpation skills, along with a full-body assessment in every session, to understand your condition and get to the root cause of the issue. Most are shocked to find out the source of your pain is not where they thought it was. read more.
