Wrist Pain & Carpal Tunnel Support Pain

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve, which runs from your forearm into your hand, becomes compressed as it passes through a narrow passage in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. This compression can affect how the nerve functions, leading to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pins and needles, hand weakness or discomfort in the wrist and hand.

Although many people associate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with wrist pain, not all wrist pain is caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Likewise, numbness or tingling in the hand can have several possible causes. Understanding exactly what you’re experiencing is an important first step before deciding on the most appropriate course of action.

The Median Nerve

The median nerve provides sensation to the thumb, index finger, middle finger and part of the ring finger. It also controls some of the small muscles at the base of the thumb that help with gripping and fine hand movements.
When this nerve is compressed within the carpal tunnel, people may notice changes in sensation, reduced hand strength, or difficulty performing everyday tasks such as holding objects, fastening buttons, or gripping a steering wheel.

How Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Can Feel

Symptoms vary from person to person and may develop gradually over time. Some people experience occasional tingling or numbness, while others notice symptoms becoming more frequent or affecting their grip.
Common symptoms may include:

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger
  • Pins and needles in the hand or fingers
  • Wrist discomfort that may spread into the hand or forearm
  • Hand weakness or reduced grip strength
  • Frequently dropping objects
  • Symptoms that are more noticeable at night or on waking

Every person’s experience is different, which is why a thorough assessment is important rather than assuming all hand or wrist symptoms are caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Post-pregnancy, I began suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, and it was incredibly tough, both physically and mentally. I couldn’t even continue my yoga practice, which was my go-to routine for healing and balance. Visiting the clinic brought me no real relief. The doctors prescribed painkillers, but I’ve always been hesitant to take medication, especially those with temporary effects and possible side effects.

Balancing life as a new mother while also working became increasingly challenging. The discomfort made even basic tasks difficult, let alone caring for my newborn. After several follow-ups at the clinic, the doctors began pushing me towards surgery, an incision I was completely uncomfortable with. The idea of having any cut or procedure done is not my thing and a big NO for me, but I truly felt like I was running out of options.

Just when I was on the verge of giving in, I randomly searched for alternatives online and came across **Bowen Therapy**. I was skeptical at first. I had been told by multiple doctors that surgery was the only way forward. But one review from Bowen Therapy stood out, a fellow mom who avoided surgery after just one session. That gave me hope.

I booked a session and from the moment I walked in, the experience was warm and welcoming. Everyone was kind, gentle, and informative. I first met with the senior therapist who took the time to explain everything about my condition, nervous system, muscular imbalances, and more. He even told me that incisions weren’t actually a cure, and that many who went through with surgery saw no long-term relief. I felt relieved and grateful I hadn’t gone down that path.

For the session itself, I chose **Olivia** and I have no words to truly express how much she helped me. Her energy was calm, soothing, and comforting. The session was peaceful, her touch gentle yet intentional. Right after I walked out, I could move my wrist and within **three days**, the pain that had crippled my day-to-day life had completely vanished. I was in disbelief. Just **one session** changed everything.

I contacted them right back to share the good news. This experience didn’t just ease a physical condition, it gave me my life back. I can now fully care for my newborn, carry her, and get through my daily routine pain-free. Olivia, you truly saved me and I’ll be forever grateful.

To the entire Bowen Therapy team: thank you for the heart you put into your work. You’re changing lives in the most meaningful way. And to any moms or anyone out there struggling with similar pain, **please give this a try**. It might just change your life too.

With all my gratitude,
Abby ❤️

My mum has been suffering from carpal tunnel since a year ago. Seeked consultation at a private hospital, did a few rounds of physiotherapy, still the pain persisted. My mum even considered surgery due to the unbearable pain. Suggested her to try out My Bowen Therapy and she felt the improvement with each session since she started 6 months ago. Huge thanks to my mum’s therapist, Ms Olivia Highly recommended

The therapist was very patient & explained the procedure thoroughly. Had a history of recurrent knee injury, backache & carpal tunnel syndrome. After the procedure, I felt light & more mobile. Definitely worth trying it out & will definitely continue a few more sessions to help my body heal.

Why We Take a Full Body Assessment Before Therapy Starts

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often associated with numbness, tingling and discomfort in the hand and wrist, but these symptoms don’t always tell the whole story. Similar symptoms can sometimes arise from other areas, including the neck, shoulder, elbow or along the pathway of the nerves that travel into the hand. This is why every appointment at My Bowen Therapy begins with a thorough whole-body assessment rather than focusing only on where you feel your symptoms.

By understanding how your symptoms developed, how they affect your daily activities, and how your body moves as a whole, we can build a clearer picture of what you’re experiencing. This assessment-led approach helps us discuss whether Bowen Therapy may be appropriate for your individual needs and supports a personalised plan based on your assessment findings.

It is also why carpal tunnel treatment in Kuala Lumpur, at least as we approach it, does not begin and end at the wrist.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Rather than focusing solely on the area where you’re experiencing symptoms, we consider how different areas of your body may influence movement and overall function. This whole-body perspective helps us build a more complete understanding of your individual needs.
Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Understanding Fascia

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds, supports and connects muscles, joints, nerves and organs throughout the body. Although awareness of fascia has grown significantly in recent years, many people are still unfamiliar with the important role it plays in movement and support.

Why It Matters

Understanding fascia and the body’s interconnected nature helps us appreciate how different areas of the body work together to support movement and function. That’s why we look beyond the area where you’re experiencing symptoms during your assessment.  By considering the whole body, we aim to better understand the factors that may be relevant to the symptoms you’re experiencing and support your individual needs.

Understanding Possible Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome develops when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. While this may sound straightforward, there isn’t always a single reason why this pressure develops. In many cases, several factors may contribute, and the cause can vary from person to person.

Because similar symptoms can also occur with other conditions affecting the neck, shoulder, arm or hand, it’s important not to assume that every episode of numbness, tingling or wrist discomfort is caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. A thorough assessment helps build a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms.

service-feature-icon-2

Repetitive Hand and Wrist Activities

Repeated gripping, forceful hand movements or spending long periods using a keyboard, mouse, tools or vibrating equipment may place increased demands on the wrist in some people. These activities don’t automatically cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but they may contribute alongside other factors.

service-feature-icon-2

Work, Hobbies and Daily Activities

The way you use your hands throughout the day can influence how your symptoms develop or change. Occupations or hobbies involving repetitive wrist movements, prolonged driving, frequent mobile phone use or sustained hand positions may be relevant during your assessment.

service-feature-icon-2

Pregnancy and Health Conditions

Some women experience Carpal Tunnel Syndrome during pregnancy due to temporary fluid retention and natural changes within the body. Certain health conditions, such as diabetes or inflammatory conditions, may also increase the likelihood of developing symptoms in some individuals. These factors are considered as part of your assessment rather than being assumed to be the cause.

service-feature-icon-2

Previous Wrist Injuries and Wrist Anatomy

A previous wrist injury, fracture, or changes affecting the wrist may alter the amount of space within the carpal tunnel or influence how the median nerve is affected. Individual differences in wrist anatomy also mean that no two people experience Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in exactly the same way.

Some people come to us some time after a wrist or hand injury has healed, with stiffness, tension or discomfort that has not settled in the way they expected. Where that is the case, your assessment considers the injury history alongside how the wrist, forearm and hand are moving now. Wrist injury treatment in Malaysia most often begins with a doctor or physiotherapist, and what we offer sits alongside that rather than in place of it.

service-feature-icon-2

Every Person Is Different

Previous injuries, posture, movement patterns, daily activities, occupation and general health may all play a role in the symptoms someone experiences. Rather than making assumptions based on symptoms alone, we take the time to understand your individual circumstances before discussing whether our assessment-led Bowen Therapy approach may be appropriate for your needs.

Common Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people notice occasional tingling or numbness that comes and goes, while others experience symptoms that become more frequent or begin to interfere with everyday activities.

Symptoms often affect the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger, although they can sometimes extend into the hand, wrist, or forearm. They may also change over time depending on your activities, wrist position and the degree of pressure on the median nerve.

service-info-icon-2

Numbness and Tingling

One of the most common symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers, and part of the ring finger. Many people describe this as pins and needles, particularly after prolonged hand use or during the night.

service-info-icon-2

Night-Time Symptoms

Symptoms often become more noticeable at night or first thing in the morning. Some people wake with numb or tingling hands and find themselves shaking or moving their hand to ease the sensation before returning to sleep.

service-info-icon-2

Hand Weakness and Grip

As symptoms progress, some people notice reduced grip strength or difficulty performing everyday tasks such as opening jars, fastening buttons, holding a steering wheel or carrying objects. Some may also find themselves dropping objects more often than usual.

service-info-icon-2

Symptoms Can Change

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome doesn’t always feel the same from day to day. Symptoms may come and go, become more noticeable during certain activities or improve with periods of rest. Every person’s experience is different, which is why a thorough assessment is important before assuming the cause of your symptoms.

service-info-icon-2

When to Seek Medical Assessment

Some symptoms should be assessed by a doctor rather than managed with hands-on therapy alone. Seek medical assessment if you experience constant numbness that does not come and go, noticeable weakness or wasting of the muscles at the base of your thumb, symptoms that are worsening steadily, or symptoms that began after a significant injury to the wrist or hand.

If you have already been assessed and advised about surgery, that discussion belongs with the doctor or surgeon managing your care. We do not advise for or against surgery.

How We Assess Your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Symptoms

No two people arrive with the same presentation, so carpal tunnel treatment in Kuala Lumpur starts here, with the assessment, rather than with the treatment itself.

Every person experiences Carpal Tunnel Syndrome symptoms differently. That’s why every consultation begins with a thorough assessment. We’ll discuss your symptoms, relevant health and injury history, daily activities, and any factors that may be contributing to your hand or wrist discomfort. We’ll also observe your posture and movement and assess factors that may be relevant to what you’re experiencing. We then develop a personalised support plan tailored to your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome commonly causes numbness, tingling, pins and needles or weakness in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and part of the ring finger. Some people also notice symptoms are worse at night or find themselves dropping objects more often. However, similar symptoms can occur with other conditions affecting the neck, shoulder, arm or hand, which is why a thorough assessment is important before assuming the cause.

Every person’s situation is different. Some people experience temporary or mild symptoms, while others require further medical assessment and management. At My Bowen Therapy, every appointment begins with a comprehensive assessment to better understand your symptoms and discuss whether our assessment-led Bowen Therapy approach may be appropriate for your individual needs.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through a narrow space in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. A range of factors may contribute, including repetitive hand activities, previous wrist injuries, pregnancy, certain health conditions and individual anatomical differences. The exact cause varies from person to person.

Night-time numbness or tingling is a common symptom of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome because changes in wrist position during sleep can increase pressure on the median nerve in some people. However, numb fingers at night can also have other causes, so an assessment is important to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.

No. While Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can cause discomfort in the wrist and hand, many other conditions may also cause wrist pain. Tendon injuries, arthritis, ligament problems, and symptoms originating from the neck or other parts of the upper limb can sometimes feel similar. A thorough assessment helps determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

People come to us for wrist pain treatment in Malaysia for a range of reasons: carpal tunnel symptoms, discomfort following a previous wrist or hand injury, or stiffness that has developed gradually without a clear trigger. If arthritis in the hand or wrist may be relevant to your symptoms, you can also read about our approach to arthritis and joint pain.

It begins with a consultation and a whole-body assessment rather than treatment on the first contact. We discuss your symptoms, your health and injury history, and your daily activities, observe how you move, and explain what we find. Only then do we discuss whether Bowen Therapy may be appropriate for you. Bowen Therapy is not a treatment for nerve compression itself, and where medical assessment or surgical opinion is needed, that comes first.

We have two Kuala Lumpur locations – Damansara (TTDI) and KLCC. Both offer a free initial consultation with no obligation to continue, and both are convenient for the surrounding areas including Bangsar, Mont Kiara and Petaling Jaya.
