Lower-Back-Pain

Understanding Back Pain

Back pain is common, and many people seek treatment because they are looking for greater comfort or relief from their symptoms. It can present in different ways. For some people, it feels like a persistent ache or stiffness. For others, it may be sharper, occur with certain movements, or become more noticeable after sitting or standing for long periods.

Lower back pain is particularly common, but where you feel discomfort does not always tell us everything about what may be contributing to it. Movement through the hips and pelvis, muscle tension, and the fascia that connects and supports structures throughout the body may all be relevant.

Recent Back Pain

Some people come to us with acute back pain that has appeared recently, perhaps after a particular movement, a period of unusual activity, or with no obvious trigger at all. Recent symptoms are one of the more common reasons people seek back pain treatment in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia more widely.

service-info-icon-1

Long-Standing Back Pain

Others have lived with chronic back pain for months or years, sometimes with periods of improvement in between. How long you have been experiencing symptoms is one of the things we discuss at your assessment, because it may influence which areas your therapist looks at and how your session is approached.

Ala has helped me tremendously managing my sciatica pain and now in managing the side effects of the microdiscectomy that I underwent last year. She’s very knowledgeable and very patient in explaining to me about my condition. I feel so much better after each session and have now even got my husband on board to Bowen Therapy.

Aazeen, is a wonderful therapist. I have been suffering from sciatica pain for so many years. After 2 to 3 sessions, 95% of the pain was gone. Now she is helping me with my osteoarthritis of the hips. She has been very helpful and I don’t find the need to do a hip replacement.

Aazeen very professional also. She has helped to cure my sciatica problem. After that I only go back to her for maintenance.

I was diagnosed with sciatica in May 2025, and I started my therapy at My Bowen Therapy few months later. After about 4 sessions without much improvement, I wanted to give up. My therapist Ala is very patient with me and encouraged me to give it another few sessions. Luckily I listened to her because my condition improved tremendously after 2 more sessions. Now I can go back to the gym for my regular exercises – cycling and swimming. The frequency and intensity of the pain have reduced by about 90%. Thank you, Ala, for your patience, support and encouragement.

From knee pain to being hospitalized due to severe lower back pain. After 2 months of physio with the hospital, I started my lower back pain recovery with Bowen 3 weeks ago. Lower back pain improves tremendously and currently able to walk normally. Previously unable to straighten my left leg due to sciatica – lower back until my calf. I am now able to wash dishes and clean my porch. I Just have to remember to take a break in between. Thank You Therapist Ala for your help and kind advice.

Why We Look Beyond the Painful Area: Our Full Body Assessment

Back pain is not always just about the area where you feel discomfort. Your back works together with surrounding areas including the hips, pelvis and legs, which is why we consider how you move as a whole rather than looking at one area in isolation.

These broader findings help guide where we work during your Bowen Therapy session rather than following the same back pain routine for everyone. Because a number of different factors may be relevant, understanding what you’re experiencing and having a thorough assessment are important first steps in deciding the most appropriate course of action.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Rather than focusing solely on the area where you feel discomfort, we consider how different areas of your body may influence movement and overall function. This whole-body perspective helps us build a more complete understanding of your individual needs.
Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Understanding Fascia

Fascia is part of this picture. It is a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles and other structures throughout the body. Because fascia works alongside muscles and joints during movement, tension or restriction in one area may be relevant to how other areas move and feel.
Understanding Fascia

Why It Matters

Understanding fascia and the body’s interconnected nature helps us appreciate how different areas of the body work together to support movement and function. That’s why we look beyond the area where you feel discomfort during your assessment. By considering the whole body, we aim to better understand the factors that may be relevant to the symptoms you’re experiencing and support your individual needs.

What May Contribute to Back Pain?

Back pain can have many contributing factors, and often there isn’t one simple explanation. Symptoms may develop gradually or become noticeable after a particular activity or change in movement. Not all back pain follows an injury or a sudden strain; for some people, it develops alongside the postural changes of pregnancy, or over a longer period as everyday demands on the body change.

service-feature-icon-1

Factors that may be relevant include:

  • Prolonged sitting or standing
  • Changes in activity or exercise
  • Repetitive movements or physical workload
  • Muscle and fascial tension
  • Changes in movement through the hips or surrounding areas
  • Previous injuries or periods of reduced activity
  • Pregnancy and the changes in posture and load that can come with it

Sometimes back pain is also associated with conditions affecting the spine or nerves. If you have symptoms such as pain that travels into the leg, numbness, or tingling, it may be helpful to explore our information on Sciatica or Slipped Disc.

How Back Pain May Feel

Back pain can vary considerably from person to person. It may be localised to one area or felt more broadly across the lower or upper back, and symptoms can change depending on movement, activity or how long you stay in one position.
Lower back pain is the most common presentation we see, though discomfort and stiffness across the upper back, middle back and shoulder blades are also frequent reasons people come in, particularly among people who spend long periods at a desk or driving.

How We Assess Your Back Pain & Symptoms

Your assessment starts with a conversation about where you feel your back pain, when it began, what makes it better or worse, and how it is affecting your everyday activities. We then look at factors that may be relevant to your individual presentation, including your posture, overall movement, and areas of muscle or fascial tension. These findings help your therapist decide which areas to focus on and tailor the approach to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach that may be used to support people experiencing lower back pain, tension or restricted movement. Your session is tailored to your individual presentation.

Not necessarily. Depending on your assessment findings, your therapist may work around the back as well as related areas such as the hips, pelvis or legs.

Yes. Back pain can affect different areas, including the upper, middle or lower back. Your assessment considers where you feel your symptoms as well as the posture and movement findings that may be relevant to your presentation.

This varies from person to person, so we cannot determine the number of sessions you may need before assessing you. Your therapist can discuss an appropriate plan with you based on your presentation and progress.

Pain that travels from the lower back into the buttock or leg can have different explanations. If your symptoms are consistent with sciatica, you may also find our dedicated Sciatica information helpful.

Back pain is a common experience during pregnancy, as posture and load through the back and pelvis change. Bowen Therapy is a gentle approach, and your therapist will adapt positioning and technique to your comfort. Let us know at your consultation if you are pregnant, or think you may be, and continue to follow the advice of your midwife or doctor.

We have two Kuala Lumpur locations: Damansara (TTDI) and KLCC. Both offer a free initial consultation with no obligation to continue.

Seek medical assessment if your back pain follows a significant injury, is severe or worsening, or is accompanied by symptoms that concern you. New bowel or bladder changes, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or significant weakness in the legs require urgent medical assessment.

Bowen Therapy uses gentle, precise hands-on techniques rather than forceful manipulation. Your therapist will work within your comfort levels and adapt the session to your individual needs.
