I was due for a total hip replacement when I came across Bowen Therapy. My experience can only be described as amazing. From being unable to do simple daily things like standing for long, walking , lifting and on occasion even driving, I am now able to lead a much better and fulfilling life. The therapist Mr Jiva Nair was wonderful and Bowen Therapy has given me a new lease on life. I would like to recommend Bowen Therapy to anyone who is considering invasive surgery or suffering from any pain.

Why We Take a Full Body Assessment Before Therapy Starts?
Hip pain isn’t always caused by the hip itself. Changes in the lower back, pelvis, muscles, fascia and movement patterns can all influence how your hip feels and functions. That’s why every appointment at My Bowen Therapy begins with a thorough whole-body assessment.
By understanding how your body moves as a whole, we can build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to your hip pain before discussing the most appropriate support for your individual needs.

Understanding Possible Causes of Hip Pain
Hip pain can develop for many different reasons and isn’t always caused by a problem within the hip joint itself. In some people, symptoms may be related to muscles, tendons or other soft tissues, while in others they may be influenced by the lower back, pelvis or age-related changes. Similar symptoms can also occur for different reasons, which is why a thorough assessment is an important first step.
Hip Joint Changes
Age-related joint changes, including osteoarthritis and reduced joint mobility, may contribute to hip pain, stiffness and reduced range of movement in some people.
Muscles, Tendons & Soft Tissues
The muscles, tendons and fascia surrounding the hip play an important role in movement and stability. Irritation or tension in these tissues may contribute to pain during activities such as walking, climbing stairs or exercising. This includes the hip flexor muscles at the front of the hip, where tightness or discomfort is a common presentation, particularly after prolonged sitting or in people who run or cycle regularly.
Lower Back & Pelvis
Not all hip pain starts in the hip. Changes affecting the lower back, pelvis or sacroiliac (SI) joint may sometimes contribute to symptoms felt around the hip, buttock or upper thigh. This overlap is one reason lower back and hip pain are so often reported together.
Occasionally, tension through the psoas, a deep muscle connecting the lower back to the hip, is relevant to symptoms felt around the front of the hip or groin. This is one of several factors we may consider as part of a whole-body assessment.
Every Person Is Different
Previous injuries, posture, movement patterns, daily activities and overall health may all influence how hip pain develops. Rather than making assumptions based on symptoms alone, we assess each person individually to better understand what may be contributing to their pain.
Common Hip Pain Symptoms
Hip pain can feel different from one person to another. Some people experience a dull ache, while others notice sharp pain, stiffness or discomfort that develops during certain movements or activities.
Symptoms may be felt in the hip itself or spread into the groin, buttock or upper thigh. Understanding your symptoms is an important first step during your assessment.
Pain
Hip pain may be felt on the outside of the hip, deep within the joint, in the groin, buttock or upper thigh. It may feel sharp, aching or throbbing and can range from mild discomfort to more persistent pain.
Symptoms Can Change
Hip pain doesn’t always remain the same. Symptoms may come and go, change with activity or become more noticeable after prolonged sitting, standing, walking or exercise. Every person’s experience is different.
Stiffness & Reduced Movement
Some people notice their hip feels stiff, particularly first thing in the morning or after sitting for long periods. Everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs or putting on shoes may become more difficult.
Pain Beyond the Hip
Hip pain isn’t always limited to the hip itself. Some people also notice discomfort in the groin, buttock, lower back or upper thigh because these areas work closely together during movement.

How We Assess Your Hip Pain & Symptoms
Every person experiences hip pain differently. That’s why every consultation begins with a thorough assessment. We’ll discuss your symptoms, relevant health and injury history, daily activities and any factors that may be contributing to your hip discomfort. We’ll also observe your posture, movement and how you perform everyday activities, and assess factors that may be relevant to what you’re experiencing. We then develop a personalised support plan tailored to your individual needs and goals.
We Listen
We take the time to understand your symptoms, when they began, any previous hip injuries or surgery, and how your hip is affecting everyday activities such as walking, sitting or sleeping.
We Observe
We observe your posture and movement, including how comfortably you walk, climb stairs and get in and out of a chair, to build a clearer picture of your individual needs.
We Assess
We assess factors that may be relevant to your symptoms, including movement patterns, muscle tension through the hip and lower back, and how one side compares with the other.
We Explain
We explain our findings in clear, straightforward language and answer any questions you may have.
We Create Your Support Plan
Based on your assessment, we develop a personalised support plan tailored to your individual needs and goals.
We Begin Your Care
If you decide to proceed, we’ll begin your personalised Bowen Therapy sessions and continue to monitor how your body responds throughout your care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hip pain can have many possible causes. It may relate to the hip joint, muscles, tendons, ligaments or surrounding soft tissues. In some people, pain felt around the hip may also be influenced by nearby areas such as the lower back or pelvis. Because similar symptoms can occur for different reasons, a thorough assessment is an important first step in understanding what may be contributing to your pain.
Hip pain while walking may occur for a variety of reasons. Some people notice discomfort when putting weight through the leg, climbing stairs or walking longer distances, while others experience stiffness that eases as they move. Understanding when your symptoms occur and how your body moves helps us build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to your hip pain.
Hip pain may feel more noticeable at night, particularly when lying on the affected side or after a busy day. Some people also experience stiffness after periods of rest. Because night-time hip pain can have many possible contributing factors, we begin with a thorough assessment to better understand your symptoms and individual circumstances.
At My Bowen Therapy, every appointment begins with a thorough assessment of your symptoms, posture and movement before discussing whether our assessment-led Bowen Therapy approach may be appropriate for your individual needs. Your care is always tailored to your specific circumstances and goals.
If your hip pain is affecting your ability to walk, work, exercise, sleep or enjoy everyday activities, or if your symptoms aren’t improving as expected, it may be worth arranging an assessment. Understanding what may be contributing to your hip pain is often the first step towards choosing the most appropriate support.
We have two Kuala Lumpur locations, Damansara (TTDI) and KLCC, and both offer a free initial consultation with no obligation to continue. We also see people who travel from further afield across Malaysia.
Most hip pain is not a medical emergency. However, you should seek prompt medical assessment if your hip pain follows a significant fall or injury, particularly if you are unable to bear weight, notice a change in the shape or position of your leg, or have severe pain that came on suddenly. You should also seek medical advice if you experience fever, redness or warmth around the hip, as this can occasionally indicate infection. If you’re unsure whether your symptoms need urgent attention, it’s always safest to seek medical advice.
