Disc-Related-Support

What Is a Slipped, Bulging or Herniated Disc?

A “slipped disc” is a common term used to describe changes to one of the discs that sit between the bones of the spine. You may also hear terms such as bulging disc, herniated disc, prolapsed disc, or disc protrusion, depending on the type of change identified. Less commonly, you may hear “disc extrusion” or “degenerative disc changes”; the latter describes age-related changes that are very common on imaging, even in people with no symptoms at all.

Despite the name, a disc does not simply “slip” in and out of place.

Disc changes can occur in the lower back or neck, and not everyone with a disc bulge or herniation experiences symptoms. When symptoms are present, they can vary considerably from person to person.

Disc changes are most often identified in the lower back (lumbar spine) or the neck (cervical spine), and less commonly in the mid-back (thoracic spine).

Slipped disc treatment in KL and across Malaysia usually begins with a doctor or spine specialist, since a disc change can only be confirmed through medical assessment or imaging. What we offer is different and complementary: an assessment of the muscular tension, posture and movement changes that often accompany a disc problem.

Some people have already had a disc problem diagnosed through medical assessment or imaging. Others may have back, neck or radiating symptoms that they believe are caused by a disc problem but have not received a diagnosis.

If you are unsure what is causing your symptoms, appropriate medical assessment may be needed rather than assuming a slipped disc is the cause.

What Symptoms Can Be Associated With a Slipped, Bulging or Herniated Disc?

A slipped, bulging, or herniated disc does not always cause symptoms. When symptoms are present, they can vary depending on the area of the spine involved and whether nearby nerves are affected.

Symptoms that may be associated with a disc problem can include:

  • Back or neck pain
  • Pain that travels into an arm or leg
  • Tingling or pins and needles
  • Numbness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Stiffness or restricted movement
  • Discomfort that changes with certain movements or positions

These symptoms can also occur for reasons unrelated to a spinal disc, so symptoms alone cannot confirm that you have a slipped or herniated disc.

When to seek Medical Attention

Some symptoms require prompt medical assessment.

Seek urgent medical attention if you develop new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or significant or worsening weakness in an arm or leg.

If your symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, began after significant trauma, or you are otherwise concerned about them, seek appropriate medical advice before starting complementary hands-on therapy.

Why Choose My Bowen Therapy for Slipped, Bulging or Herniated Disc Support?

When you have been diagnosed with a disc problem, or you are unsure what is contributing to your symptoms, we believe the starting point should be understanding your individual presentation rather than applying the same treatment to everyone. This is what shapes our approach to slipped disc treatment in Kuala Lumpur.
Comprehensive Assessment

Assessment-Led Approach

We consider your symptoms, movement, and relevant areas of the body before deciding how to approach your treatment. Throughout your session, we continue to observe how your body responds, helping to guide a personalised approach to your care.

Multidisciplinary Team

Gentle, Hands-On Treatment

Bowen Therapy uses gentle, targeted movements over muscles and fascia. Treatment is adapted to your individual presentation and does not involve forceful spinal manipulation.

Whole-Body Approach

Fascia-Focused, Whole-Body Approach

Symptoms are not always experienced only where a disc change has been identified. Where relevant, we may assess movement and muscular or fascial tension in other areas of the body rather than focusing solely on one part of the spine.

Treatment Tailored to You

Treatment Tailored to You

An MRI finding does not tell us everything about how someone feels or moves. Your treatment is based on your individual assessment and presentation rather than the disc diagnosis alone.

I can’t say enough good things about this place and the staff. I came in after suffering 3 slipped discs with herniation. I was suffering for over 2 weeks while trying my Chiropractor and acupuncture. Those helped but did not solve the issues. After my MRI showed the herniation of the discs I decided to give My Bowen Therapy a try and wow, what a difference it has been!

After the 1st therapy I could rest finally and after the 3rd therapy I could start exercising again. What a relief!

Then suddenly I got into a car accident where my neck was jammed and pinched where I could barely look to the left and straighten my neck. My Therapist, Siti was so amazing helping with my lower back that I went to see her. Once again she was amazing and relieved the pain.

If you’re suffering from any discomfort I highly recommend going to see them. I see why they get the near perfect reviews.

Thank you to all the wonderful staff and My Therapist, Siti!

Came in for this nagging pain in my lower back. I was already getting therapy from a chiropractic clinic for my bulging disc but my pain was not getting any better. It got to the point where I needed a second opinion. I went in today, and to my surprise, I walked out with my pain almost completely gone. I felt like a lot of my mobility functions drastically improved. Will definitely go back. They obviously know what they are doing.

I had a sudden severe back pain due to chronic slipped disc. The doctor told me that if the pain came back, he would refer me for an operation. I searched for alternatives and found My Bowen Therapy.I was not sure  if they would be able to help, but they did help from the first session. I was able to move smoothly and the pain just faded away like magic. I am feeling better now. I would recommend them for anyone, they are worth the RM150 you pay per session.

How Can Bowen Therapy Support Someone With a Slipped, Bulging or Herniated Disc?

At My Bowen Therapy, we do not attempt to push, manipulate or reposition a spinal disc, whether it has been described as bulging, protruded, extruded, herniated or prolapsed. Instead, our approach focuses on how your body is moving and the muscular and fascial tension that may be present around your individual presentation.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Your therapist may assess areas beyond where you feel your symptoms. Depending on what we find, treatment may involve gentle Bowen moves around the back, pelvis, hips, legs, neck or other relevant areas of the body.

Understanding Fascia

Our assessment-led, fascia-focused approach aims to:
  • Reduce muscular and fascial tension
  • Support more comfortable movement and mobility
  • Address areas of guarding or restriction identified during your assessment
  • Support the way your body manages movement and physical load

Why It Matters

Treatment is individualised. Two people with the same MRI finding or disc diagnosis may have very different symptoms, movement patterns and areas of tension, so they may not receive the same treatment.

Why Do Slipped, Bulging or Herniated Discs Occur?

service-feature-icon-1

Spinal discs sit between the vertebrae and help the spine manage movement and load. The muscles, fascia, ligaments, and other soft tissues surrounding the spine also contribute to movement, support, and how forces are distributed through the area.

service-feature-icon-1

Disc changes can develop for different reasons and do not always have one identifiable cause. Factors may include age-related changes, physical loading, repetitive activity, injury, and individual health or lifestyle factors.

service-feature-icon-1

When pain or irritation is present, muscles may also tighten or guard around the affected area. Changes in soft-tissue tension and movement can influence how someone moves and loads their spine, which may contribute to their overall symptoms and movement restrictions.

service-feature-icon-1

This is why our assessment does not focus only on the location of a diagnosed disc change. We may also assess movement, posture, and areas of muscular or fascial tension that could be relevant to how you are moving and feeling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bowen Therapy does not push a disc back into place or repair a bulging or herniated disc. At My Bowen Therapy, treatment focuses on the individual, including movement and areas of muscular or fascial tension identified during your assessment.

A disc diagnosis does not automatically determine whether Bowen Therapy is appropriate for you. We consider your symptoms, medical history and individual presentation first.

If there are symptoms or circumstances that require medical assessment or clearance before treatment, we will advise you accordingly.

“Slipped disc” is a commonly used term rather than a description of a disc literally slipping out of place. Depending on the type of disc change, you may hear terms such as bulging disc, herniated disc, prolapsed disc or disc protrusion.

If you are unsure about a diagnosis or imaging result, it is best to discuss it with an appropriately qualified medical professional.

Not necessarily. Some people come to us with an existing diagnosis or imaging, while others have symptoms without knowing their cause.

If you have had an X-ray rather than an MRI, it is worth knowing that X-rays show bone rather than disc tissue, so a bulge, herniation or prolapse is not something they display directly. Your doctor will advise which imaging, if any, is appropriate for you.

We do not use Bowen Therapy, posture assessment or an AR Posture Scan to diagnose a spinal disc problem. If your presentation suggests medical investigation or assessment should come first, we will advise you accordingly.

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique and does not involve forceful spinal manipulation. Treatment is adapted to the individual and what is appropriate based on your assessment and presentation.

Always tell your therapist if a position or movement is uncomfortable so the treatment can be adjusted where appropriate.

There is no set number of sessions for someone with a slipped, bulging or herniated disc. People with similar diagnoses can have very different symptoms and presentations.

Your therapist will assess how you are responding and discuss an appropriate treatment plan with you rather than prescribing the same number of sessions for everyone.

That decision belongs with the doctor or spine specialist managing your care, who has your imaging and your full clinical picture. We do not advise for or against surgery, and Bowen Therapy is not an alternative to medical treatment where that is needed.

Some people choose to have Bowen Therapy alongside the medical care they are receiving, for support with the muscular tension and movement changes that often accompany a disc problem. If you are receiving other treatment, let your therapist know at your consultation so it can be taken into account.

Symptoms travelling from the lower back into the buttock or leg can have different explanations. If your symptoms are consistent with sciatica, you may find our dedicated Sciatica information helpful.

Seek urgent medical attention if you develop new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or significant or worsening weakness in an arm or leg.

Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, or symptoms following significant trauma, should also be medically assessed rather than relying on complementary hands-on therapy.
