Our Story

The Story Behind My Bowen Therapy

It all started with a misunderstanding…

A misunderstanding that would eventually touch the lives of thousands of people.

If you’d told me years ago that I’d one day found My Bowen Therapy in Kuala Lumpur, I would never have believed you.

It all began while I was living in Dubai.

My mum came to stay with me after being diagnosed with breast cancer that had spread to her bones. Although I knew she was unwell, I don’t think I had fully appreciated just how much pain she was living with. I wanted to take her to another doctor in Dubai, but she gently explained that her medical team had done everything they could.

A friend suggested I speak to her therapist. At the time, I had no idea what she actually did. She practised several different therapies, and I jokingly called her the “hocus pocus woman.”

When I spoke to her, she explained that she couldn’t cure Mum’s cancer, but she thought Bowen Therapy might help make her more comfortable.

Except… I didn’t hear Bowen Therapy.

Because Mum’s cancer had spread to her bones, I genuinely thought she’d said “Bone Therapy.”

I remember thinking, “Bone Therapy? I’ve never heard of that before.” It made perfect sense to me at the time. Mum had cancer in her bones, so naturally I assumed this was some kind of therapy for bone cancer.

It wasn’t until much later that I realised she’d actually said Bowen Therapy.

Seeing Mum’s journey with Bowen Therapy left a lasting impression on me. It also left me with one big question…

Why had I never heard of this before?

Even today, I still think of Bowen Therapy as Australia’s best-kept secret.

Years later, life presented me with another reason to look into it.

One of my sons was facing learning and developmental challenges. Like any parent, I wanted to do everything I could to support him alongside the care he was already receiving. I remembered reading that Bowen Therapy had been used to support children with similar challenges, and something made me go back and explore it further.

I didn’t enrol on a Bowen Therapy course because I wanted to change careers.

I enrolled because I was a mum looking for another way to help my son.

Like every Bowen student, I needed to complete practical training as part of my qualification. I expected family and close friends would help me gain the experience I needed.

Instead, something completely unexpected happened.

To this day, I still don’t know how word spread that I was learning Bowen Therapy. People I’d never met started getting in touch after hearing about me through friends, neighbours and word of mouth.

They’d simply ask whether I was looking for more people to practise with and offer to volunteer.

“How on earth did they even find me?” I remember thinking.

But perhaps the biggest lesson wasn’t about Bowen Therapy at all.

It was the realisation that, like so many people, I’d always assumed the source of pain was where it hurt. Through my training, I began to understand that the body works as a connected system, and that the source of pain isn’t always where we feel it.

That simple shift in thinking changed everything for me.

It became the philosophy on which My Bowen Therapy was founded in 2015, and it continues to shape how we support every client today.

In 2016, I was honoured to be named a finalist in the Federation of Holistic Therapists’ International Complementary Therapist of the Year Awards. While the recognition meant a great deal to me personally, what mattered most was that it helped shine a light on Bowen Therapy and introduce more people to an approach they may never have otherwise heard about.

People sometimes ask me how My Bowen Therapy came to be.

The truth is, I often think it all comes back to one person-my mum.

If she hadn’t come to stay with me in Dubai, I may never have made that phone call. I may never have mistaken Bowen Therapy for Bone Therapy. I may never have enrolled on a course, met the people who volunteered to help me learn, or founded My Bowen Therapy.

It’s amazing how one unexpected conversation, one misunderstanding, can create a ripple effect you could never have imagined.

And yes…

I still believe Bowen Therapy is Australia’s best-kept secret.

A Personal Journey That Inspired a Different Approach

My Bowen Therapy was founded by Lorna Mair in 2015 with a simple belief: every person deserves to be assessed as an individual, not treated as a diagnosis or a painful body part.

The clinic grew from a personal journey that began with her mother’s experience of ongoing pain and later led her to learn Bowen Therapy while supporting her son, Kieran. Those experiences shaped a philosophy centred on understanding the whole person, careful assessment and personalised care.

A Personal Journey That Inspired a Different Approach

Building a Whole-Body Philosophy

As the clinic grew, experience working with thousands of people continued to reinforce how posture, movement and the relationships between different parts of the body can influence pain and mobility. It confirmed that no two assessments are ever the same and that every treatment plan should begin with understanding how the body functions as a whole.

This whole-body philosophy remains at the heart of everything we do. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach, our therapists take the time to assess each individual and develop a personalised treatment plan based on their assessment findings, goals and needs.

Building a Whole-Body Philosophy

Continuing to Grow

What began as a single clinic has grown into a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists and sports science graduates, all trained in Bowen Therapy and committed to ongoing professional development.

Today, My Bowen Therapy has supported more than 22,000 clients across our TTDI and KLCC centres, while continuing to build on the same principles that inspired the clinic from the very beginning: professional care, careful assessment and helping people better understand their bodies.

Our Approach

Assessment Comes First Logo

Assessment Comes First

Every appointment begins with understanding how your body moves, not simply where you feel discomfort. We take the time to assess posture, movement patterns, mobility and the relationships between different areas of the body before deciding where treatment should begin.

Personalised Care Logo

No two people move the same, which is why no two treatment plans should be identical. Every assessment is individual, allowing your therapist to adapt your care according to your goals, symptoms and clinical findings rather than following a standard protocol.

Looking Beyond the Area of Discomfort

Pain isn’t always influenced solely by the place where symptoms are felt. Our whole-body approach considers how movement, posture and surrounding tissues may be contributing to your presentation, helping us build a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual assessment findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people find Bowen Therapy comfortable. Many people also describe the sessions as relaxing. Occasionally, an area being worked on may feel briefly tender rather than painful, especially if the muscles or soft tissues are particularly tight or sensitive. Your therapist will always work within your comfort levels and adapt the session to your individual needs.

Our team includes therapists with backgrounds in physiotherapy, sports science and rehabilitation. Every therapist receives comprehensive training in the My Bowen Therapy approach and follows the same founder-led standards. We are committed to ongoing professional development, ensuring a consistent, assessment-led experience across both centres.

This varies depending on your individual presentation, how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms and how you respond to treatment.

Your therapist will discuss their recommendations with you after your assessment rather than prescribing the same number of sessions for everyone.

While Bowen Therapy remains our primary hands-on therapy, treatment at My Bowen Therapy is never based solely on a person’s symptoms. Every client begins with an individual assessment, including posture, movement, palpation, fascia and soft tissue assessment, to help us understand how the body is functioning as a connected system. These findings guide the treatment approach for that individual, allowing our therapists to select the most appropriate Bowen techniques and, where appropriate, incorporate additional approaches including scar release work, movement advice or rehabilitation exercises.

Our approach is assessment-led because we don’t believe every person with similar symptoms should automatically receive the same treatment. While our work is grounded in the core principles of Bowen Therapy, every session begins with an individual assessment. We observe posture, movement and compensation patterns, and use palpation to assess soft tissue tension before deciding which Bowen techniques may be most appropriate. This allows every treatment to be tailored to the individual rather than applying the same sequence of techniques for everyone with similar symptoms The result is a thoughtful, personalised approach that remains true to the gentle, non-invasive principles of Bowen Therapy.

My Bowen Therapy was founded by Lorna Mair in 2015 with the vision of creating a professional, assessment-led Bowen Therapy centre in Kuala Lumpur. Since then, the centre has supported more than 22,000 clients through a gentle, whole-body approach to pain, posture and movement.

Bowen Therapy is commonly chosen by people seeking support for back pain, neck pain, shoulder tension, knee discomfort, plantar fasciitis, posture concerns, sciatica-type symptoms and general movement stiffness.
