What to Expect at Your First Visit
If you’ve never visited My Bowen Therapy in Kuala Lumpur before, it’s natural to wonder what your first visit will be like. Many people arrive feeling a little uncertain. They may have tried other approaches before, be living with discomfort for some time, or simply not know what to expect.
From the moment you arrive, our focus is on helping you feel comfortable, listened to and understood. Your first visit isn’t about rushing into treatment.
Your First Visit
Your Free Consultation
Every first visit begins with a free consultation. This gives us an opportunity to get to know you before deciding whether Bowen Therapy is likely to be appropriate for your needs.
We’ll start with a conversation about what’s been happening, how your symptoms have developed and what you’d like to achieve. You’re welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, and there’s plenty of time to ask questions along the way.
From there, we’ll carry out an individual assessment. This may include looking at how you stand, move or walk, as well as gently assessing areas that may be contributing to the way your body is feeling and moving.
Many people are surprised by what we notice during an assessment.
You might hear us point out differences in movement, areas of tension or changes in the way your body is working together. These observations help us build a clearer picture of what’s happening, rather than focusing only on the area that’s uncomfortable.
Once we’ve completed the assessment, we’ll explain what we’ve observed in straightforward, everyday language. We’ll discuss whether Bowen Therapy is likely to be appropriate for you and answer any questions before you decide whether you’d like to continue with treatment.
There’s never any pressure. We want you to feel informed, comfortable and confident before making your decision.
Our Free Consultation Includes
- Time to discuss your concerns and goals
- A personalised assessment
- An Digital posture assessment
- An explanation of our findings in everyday language
- The opportunity to ask questions before deciding whether to continue with treatment
Why do we spend time talking before treatment?
People sometimes arrive expecting us to begin treatment straight away. But the conversation is one of the most valuable parts of the visit.
The more we understand about you, your daily activities, previous injuries and how your symptoms have changed over time, the better we can tailor our assessment. It also gives you the chance to ask questions and understand why we’re recommending a particular approach.
If You Choose to Continue with Bowen Therapy
If, following your free consultation, you decide you’d like to continue with Bowen Therapy, we’ll explain what will happen before we begin.
Many people aren’t quite sure what to expect from their first Bowen Therapy session. Some imagine it will feel like a massage because it’s a hands-on approach. Although many people describe feeling deeply relaxed after their session, Bowen Therapy feels quite different from a massage.
Rather than using continuous pressure or spending long periods working on the same area, Bowen Therapy uses a series of gentle, precise movements followed by short pauses. Those pauses are an intentional part of the session and are just as important as the gentle movements themselves.
During those pauses, we’re observing how your body responds before deciding what to do next. Every person responds differently, which is why we don’t simply follow the same routine for everyone.
The atmosphere is usually quiet and relaxed. Some people enjoy chatting during their session, while others prefer to close their eyes and rest. We simply follow your lead and want you to feel as comfortable as possible. People experience Bowen Therapy in different ways. Some people notice warmth, tingling or other gentle sensations during their session, while others simply feel relaxed. Some notice very little at all, particularly if they’ve been living with discomfort for a long time and have become less aware of the subtle changes happening in their body. That’s completely normal. Not noticing these sensations doesn’t mean your body isn’t responding. Everyone experiences Bowen Therapy differently.
Throughout your Bowen Therapy session, we’ll continue to explain what we’re doing whenever it’s helpful and answer any questions you may have. If you’re interested, we’re always happy to explain more about how your body is moving and responding. If you’d rather simply relax and enjoy the quiet, that’s perfectly fine too.
Our goal is for you to feel comfortable, informed and supported throughout your time with us.
Why do Bowen Therapy sessions include pauses?
People sometimes think we’ve stopped treating them because our hands aren’t always on them. In fact, the pauses are a deliberate part of the session.
After each group of Bowen moves, we take time to observe how your body responds before deciding what to do next. It’s one of the reasons every session is individual. Rather than following the same routine, we’re continually observing, reassessing and adapting our approach to you.
Taking Time to Rest
One of the things that makes My Bowen Therapy different is that we don’t rush from one technique to the next.
Towards the end of your session, we may simply invite you to rest quietly for a short period. This isn’t because your session has finished or because nothing is happening. It’s an intentional part of the experience.
Many people become so relaxed that they drift off to sleep. Others simply enjoy a few moments of quiet before getting up again.
During this time, your body has an opportunity to settle before returning to your normal daily activities. We also take the opportunity to observe how you’ve responded throughout your session before helping you get ready to leave.
When you’re ready, we’ll help you sit up comfortably before standing. We’ll make sure you’re feeling steady and, if needed, give you a few extra moments to adjust before getting on your feet.
We often smile and say “OK, let’s take your body for a test drive”
As you walk, we’ll continue observing how your body moves compared with when you first arrived. Rather than asking you to think about how you’re walking, we simply let you move naturally. This gives us a more accurate picture of how your body is responding.
If we’ve noticed any changes, we’ll explain them before you leave and answer any questions you may have. We’ll also let you know if there’s anything we’d like you to pay attention to over the next few days. Some people tell us they feel lighter, looser or move more comfortably as they walk. Others notice very little immediately afterwards. Both experiences are completely normal. The way your body responds over the following days often provides the most useful information.
Why do you ask me to rest before I leave?
We don’t like rushing people straight off the treatment couch.
Giving your body a few quiet moments before standing allows you to relax, settle and adjust before returning to your normal routine.
It’s also another opportunity for us to observe how you’ve responded during the session. Every visit teaches us a little more about how your body moves and responds, helping us make informed decisions as we continue your care.”
Recommendations and Your Progress
Every person responds differently, which is why we don’t recommend the same plan for everyone.
At the end of your visit, we’ll discuss what we’ve observed, answer any remaining questions and, if appropriate, make recommendations based on your individual circumstances.
Some people notice changes quickly. Others take longer. That’s completely normal.
Rather than making assumptions after just one visit, we prefer to see how your body responds over the coming days before deciding what to do next. Any recommendations we make are guided by your progress, your goals and what we observe each time we see you.
Our aim is never to follow a fixed routine or recommend the same number of visits for everyone. Instead, we believe in continually reassessing, listening to your feedback and adapting our approach as your body changes.
You’ll always understand why we’re making a recommendation, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions before deciding what feels right for you.
Why can’t you tell me exactly how many visits I’ll need?
It’s one of the questions we’re asked most often, and I completely understand why people ask it. The truth is that no two people respond in exactly the same way. While our experience helps guide us, your progress is one of the most important factors in deciding what happens next.
That’s why we reassess at every visit rather than following a predetermined plan. It allows us to tailor our recommendations to you, rather than asking you to fit into a standard programme.
Before You Leave
Before you head home, we’ll make sure you feel comfortable and have everything you need.
If we’ve recommended any simple exercises or stretches, we’ll explain them carefully before you leave. We believe that home advice should be practical and realistic, so we keep exercises straightforward and easy to fit into everyday life. When appropriate, we’ll also send you a link to a short demonstration video, so you can refer back to it whenever you need.
We’ll also talk you through our aftercare recommendations and provide you with a copy to take home. These include simple guidance on things such as keeping well hydrated, avoiding prolonged periods in one position and giving your body the opportunity to keep moving naturally throughout the day.
For example, we often encourage people to get up and move every 30 minutes rather than sitting for long periods. Gentle, regular movement is something we generally encourage because fascia responds well to movement.
If there are any activities we’d like you to avoid for a short time after your session, such as applying heat or cold to the area, we’ll explain why and include that advice in your aftercare guide.
Before you leave, we’ll make sure you know what to expect over the coming days, answer any final questions and explain when we’d like to hear from you again, if appropriate.
Why don’t we give lots of exercises?
Over the years I’ve learned that the best advice is often the simplest.
If someone leaves with a long list of exercises, life usually gets in the way and they don’t get done. We’d much rather recommend one or two simple things that fit easily into your day than a complicated routine that’s difficult to keep up with.
Our goal is to support your progress, not add another chore to your day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most people find Bowen Therapy comfortable. Many people also describe the sessions as relaxing. Occasionally, an area being worked on may feel briefly tender rather than painful, especially if the muscles or soft tissues are particularly tight or sensitive. Your therapist will always work within your comfort levels and adapt the session to your individual needs.
Our team includes therapists with backgrounds in physiotherapy, sports science and rehabilitation. Every therapist receives comprehensive training in the My Bowen Therapy approach and follows the same founder-led standards. We are committed to ongoing professional development, ensuring a consistent, assessment-led experience across both centres.
This varies depending on your individual presentation, how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms and how you respond to treatment.
Your therapist will discuss their recommendations with you after your assessment rather than prescribing the same number of sessions for everyone.
While Bowen Therapy remains our primary hands-on therapy, treatment at My Bowen Therapy is never based solely on a person’s symptoms. Every client begins with an individual assessment, including posture, movement, palpation, fascia and soft tissue assessment, to help us understand how the body is functioning as a connected system. These findings guide the treatment approach for that individual, allowing our therapists to select the most appropriate Bowen techniques and, where appropriate, incorporate additional approaches including scar release work, movement advice or rehabilitation exercises.
Our approach is assessment-led because we don’t believe every person with similar symptoms should automatically receive the same treatment. While our work is grounded in the core principles of Bowen Therapy, every session begins with an individual assessment. We observe posture, movement and compensation patterns, and use palpation to assess soft tissue tension before deciding which Bowen techniques may be most appropriate. This allows every treatment to be tailored to the individual rather than applying the same sequence of techniques for everyone with similar symptoms The result is a thoughtful, personalised approach that remains true to the gentle, non-invasive principles of Bowen Therapy.
My Bowen Therapy was founded by Lorna Mair in 2015 with the vision of creating a professional, assessment-led Bowen Therapy centre in Kuala Lumpur. Since then, the centre has supported more than 22,000 clients through a gentle, whole-body approach to pain, posture and movement.
Bowen Therapy is commonly chosen by people seeking support for back pain, neck pain, shoulder tension, knee discomfort, plantar fasciitis, posture concerns, sciatica-type symptoms and general movement stiffness.
