Scar Tissue Support

What Is Scar Tissue?

Scar tissue is a normal part of the body’s healing process. Whenever tissue is damaged through surgery, injury, burns, or other trauma, the body repairs the area by producing new collagen fibres. This repaired tissue is known as scar tissue.

Scar tissue can form on the skin or deeper within the body around muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Internal scar tissue may also develop around surgical sites and other healing tissues. While many scars become softer and more flexible over time, every person heals differently. Most scars never cause ongoing problems, while others may be associated with tightness, stiffness, or changes in movement.

Because scar tissue is only one part of the body’s healing response, understanding whether it is relevant to your symptoms requires a thorough assessment rather than assumptions.

The Healing Process

In the days and weeks following an injury or surgery, new collagen fibres are laid down to restore strength to the damaged tissue. Over the following months, these fibres continue to remodel as the body adapts. Healing varies from person to person, which is why every scar behaves differently.

service-info-icon-2

Internal & External Scar Tissue

Not all scar tissue is visible. While skin scars can easily be seen, internal scar tissue may also develop around muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and surgical sites. Many people are unaware that although the skin may appear fully healed, deeper tissues continue adapting and remodelling for many months.

service-info-icon-2

How Scar Tissue May Affect Movement

Most scars heal without causing ongoing problems. However, some people notice feelings of tightness, stiffness, reduced flexibility or changes in movement around the affected area. Because muscles, fascia and other soft tissues work together to support movement, changes in one area may influence how the body moves as a whole. Every person’s experience is different, which is why assessment is important.

service-info-icon-2

Why a Whole-Body Assessment Matters

When assessing movement, we don’t focus only on where symptoms are felt. We also consider previous surgery, injuries, burns, fractures and other significant tissue trauma as part of your body’s history. These findings are assessed alongside posture, movement and other clinical observations to build a clearer understanding of what may, or may not, be contributing to your presentation.

I have never found any scar treatment elsewhere until I did treatment at My Bowen. They recommended me to get the scar treatment since I have so many surgery scars in my abdomen. After 2 sessions of scar treatment, I can feel some difference and improvement in my overall body pain. Thanks for the treatment. Keep thriving to help us all in relieving our pain.

Bowen has been an absolute wonder and blessing!.. It has addressed back (lower and upper) issues that I have had for well over 15 years. I see the changes quite immediately for some areas and for others it takes some time.

The Scar Tissue release has also been such a pleasant surprise. The stubborn toughness of the scars are now softer and I have to admit I do see a difference on some things; subtle differences but still a change for the better!

Thankyou Aazeen for taking your time and looking after me with the sessions!..

If you have sport injuries, surgery, accidents related injuries or any other chronic pain, My Bowen Therapy is definitely worth your time and investment. They are very thorough and attentive. They provide guidance and exercises to achieve a better healing process and, above all, leave no stone unturned. I highly recommend them.”

Why we take a full body assessment before therapy starts

Most people expect us to look only at where it hurts. Instead, we assess how your whole body moves and consider previous surgery, injuries, and other significant tissue trauma alongside your current symptoms. This helps us build a clearer picture of your presentation, rather than assuming a scar is, or isn’t, relevant to what you’re experiencing.

Scar tissue doesn’t always develop in isolation. Changes in the way you move can influence how surrounding muscles, fascia and joints work together, and tension or restrictions in one area may affect how your body compensates elsewhere. This is why we begin every appointment with a thorough whole-body assessment rather than focusing only on where a scar is located.

By understanding your posture, movement, and relevant history alongside your current symptoms, we can build a clearer picture of what you’re experiencing and discuss whether our assessment-led Bowen Therapy approach may be appropriate for your individual needs.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Rather than focusing solely on the area where you feel tension, we may also consider previous injuries or surgery, differences in movement between sides, sleep, and everyday activities such as prolonged sitting, computer work, driving or frequent phone use that could be relevant to your presentation. This whole-body perspective helps us build a more complete understanding of your individual needs.
Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Understanding Fascia

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds, supports and connects muscles, joints, nerves and organs throughout the body. Although awareness of fascia has grown significantly in recent years, many people are still unfamiliar with the important role it plays in movement and support.

Why It Matters

In our experience, some people become accustomed to longstanding areas of tension and may not realise how much their movement or posture has changed over time.

How Scar Tissue may affect the body

Most scars heal without causing ongoing problems, and many people never notice any long-term effects. However, some people describe feelings of tightness, pulling, stiffness or changes in movement around a scar. Every person’s experience is unique, which is why it’s important not to assume that every scar is clinically relevant, or that it can be ruled out without a thorough assessment.

service-feature-icon-1

Tightness

Some people describe a feeling of tightness, pulling or tugging around a scar, particularly during stretching, reaching or certain movements. This may occur soon after healing or develop gradually over time as the tissues continue to remodel.

service-feature-icon-1

Reduced Mobility

Depending on where a scar is located, some people notice stiffness, reduced flexibility or a feeling that movement is restricted.

service-feature-icon-1

Changes in Movement

The body’s muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments work together during movement. If movement becomes altered around one area, some people naturally adapt how they move or use other parts of their body. Whether this is relevant to a person’s symptoms requires individual assessment.

service-feature-icon-1

Every Person Is Different

Many people have scars that never cause discomfort or affect movement in any noticeable way. Others may experience ongoing tightness or changes in mobility. Rather than making assumptions based on the presence of a scar alone, we assess your symptoms, movement, and history to better understand what may or may not be contributing to your presentation

Common causes of scar tissue

Scar tissue can develop after many different types of tissue damage, including surgery, sporting injuries, burns, fractures and deep cuts. While the healing process follows similar biological principles, every injury and every person’s healing response is unique. Understanding how scar tissue develops in different situations helps provide useful context during your assessment.

service-info-icon-2

Surgery & Healing

Surgery is one of the most common reasons scar tissue forms. Whether following a C-section, joint replacement, spinal surgery, or another procedure, scar tissue develops as part of the body’s normal healing process. While most surgical scars heal without causing ongoing problems, every person’s healing journey is unique. For some people, post-surgery scar tissue continues to feel tight or restricted well after the surgical wound itself has closed, which is when surgical scar treatment through an assessment-led approach may be worth considering.

service-info-icon-2

Injuries & Soft Tissues

Scar tissue may also develop after muscle tears, ligament injuries, tendon injuries, burns, fractures, deep cuts, and sporting injuries. These are all normal parts of the body’s healing response and become part of your body’s injury history.

Every Body Heals Differently

No two people heal in exactly the same way. Rather than assuming an old scar is, or isn’t, related to your symptoms, we assess your posture, movement, previous surgery, injuries and overall history to build a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to your presentation.

How We Assess Your Symptoms

Every person heals differently, which is why we don’t assume that a scar is, or isn’t, related to your symptoms. Every consultation begins with a thorough assessment where we discuss your symptoms, medical and injury history, previous surgery, posture and movement. We then assess the factors that may be relevant to your presentation before discussing whether Bowen Therapy may be appropriate and developing a personalised support plan tailored to your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scar tissue is the body’s natural way of repairing damaged tissue after surgery, injury, burns or other trauma. It is made primarily of collagen and forms as part of the normal healing process. While many scars heal without causing ongoing problems, every person’s healing response is different.

Scar tissue doesn’t always cause pain. Many people have scars that never affect their comfort or movement. However, some people may experience tightness, sensitivity or changes in movement around a scar. Because pain can have many possible causes, it’s important not to assume a scar is responsible without a thorough assessment.

In some people, old scars may be associated with feelings of tightness or reduced mobility, while others experience no lasting effects at all. Previous surgery and injuries form part of your body’s healing history, which is why we consider them alongside your current symptoms and movement as part of a complete assessment.

Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that can develop internally as part of the body’s natural healing process, particularly after surgery or inflammation. Many adhesions never cause symptoms, while others may be associated with stiffness or reduced movement. Whether they are clinically relevant depends on the individual and should be assessed as part of a complete clinical picture.

Previous surgery, fractures, burns, sporting injuries and other significant tissue trauma become part of your body’s healing history. Most heal without causing ongoing problems, but understanding that history can sometimes provide useful information when assessing how your body moves today. Rather than making assumptions, we consider previous injuries alongside your symptoms, posture, movement and other assessment findings.

Yes. Scar tissue naturally forms as part of the body’s healing process after surgery. This includes procedures such as C-sections, knee surgery, shoulder surgery, spinal surgery and many other operations. Most surgical scars heal without causing ongoing problems, although every person’s healing journey is different. During your assessment, we consider previous surgery alongside your symptoms, posture and movement rather than assuming it is responsible for how you feel today.

Scar tissue doesn’t disappear completely, but many scars soften and become more flexible as the tissue continues to remodel over the following months. How much a scar changes varies from person to person. If a scar continues to feel tight, restricted or relevant to how you’re moving, that’s something worth assessing rather than assuming it will resolve on its own.

Some people use scar tissue massage as one approach to working with an old scar, and results vary from person to person. At My Bowen Therapy, our approach isn’t built around massage; we start with a whole-body assessment, considering your scar alongside your posture, movement and history, before discussing whether Bowen Therapy may be appropriate for your individual needs.

Yes. One of our therapists, Olivia, holds additional certification in scar release treatment, alongside her Diploma in Physiotherapy. Whether this is relevant to you depends on your individual presentation, so every appointment still begins with a full assessment before discussing what may be appropriate for your needs.

We have two Kuala Lumpur locations, Damansara (TTDI) and KLCC, and both offer a free initial consultation with no obligation to continue. We also see people who travel from further afield across Malaysia.

Most scars are not a medical concern once fully healed. However, you should seek medical advice if a scar or the surrounding area becomes red, swollen, warm or painful, if a wound has not healed as expected, if you notice unusual changes to a mole or area of skin, or if you have any concerns about a scar’s appearance or behaviour. If you’re unsure, it’s always safest to seek medical advice.
